Uganda Current Events The state of the free press in Uganda is complex. On one hand, Uganda is said to have one of the most free and active media landscapes in Central and East Africa, with courts regularly ruling in favor of journalists' rights, however, journalists face intimidation and violence almost daily, primarily from security services. There are numerous state-owned media outlets, many of which are loyal to Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country since 1986. Despite constitutional guarantees of press freedom, a series of laws and extralegal mechanisms continue to limit free expression.
